No one is excused from going on tilt, even the best players may experience it. What is important is that you know that you are going on tilt. Recognition of the situation will put you ahead of your opponents.
You might recognize that you are going on tilt, but since you are ruled by emotions you might not accept the reality at once. You might deny that you are on tilt and try to beat the game. Here’s what you should really do:
When on tilt, go home
Even when on tilt, there may be a chance that you can still win some money depending on your skills. However, you risk your bankroll severely when you force the game. You might also notice that you are going on tilt so you decide to take a few games off and walk around, talk to some people, but when this fails, the wisest choice is to go home.
Getting even
You have to erase the phrase “get even” from your poker vocabulary. If this will be your approach then you are guiding your poker career to catastrophe. When you try to get back your losses, you tend to push yourself to more off balance and player worse.
No whining
When you feel bad about your game and tell everyone about it, you are giving away vital information that can further push you down. Before you know it, other players will be taking advantage and take away your chips. Instead try to adjust your table image and avoid giving so much tells about your bad game.
Play straightforward poker
If you are playing bad and cannot really leave the game right away, play the game according to textbook and try to survive.

There’s millions of bad beat stories out there, but the one that I’ll never forget is TJ Cloutier’s. He lost the WSOP Main Event to a 3-outer on the river, seeing Chris “Jesus” Ferguson become a huge name in poker, while he (even though he still plays a lot of tournaments) became even more addicted to craps and other table games after this devastating loss.
TJ is a great guy, and I used to play with him at the Sands every once in a while. He knows his poker, he likes to talk — but he never really overcame this horrible hand. Check it out for yourself.

I’ve met Tony G. twice in my life. Once over five years ago at the Rio while we were in the final 18 of a WSOP PLO tournament; and one this year at the M resort when he was playing the Premier League Poker there. At the table, he’s a great guy – and off the table, he’s a great guy too. Tony G has class, and he is a very, very intelligent guy. He’s great.
BUT, as soon as the camera’s show up, he completely changes. At the M Resort, he was talking to everyone — and once the camera’s started rolling, he started shouting and being a total d*ck. I don’t like people who have to be insincere to get airtime.
Here’s some of the worst of Tony.

Hello and welcome to Old Man Poker. I’ve created this site to talk about the game of poker, a game I’ve been playing since my teens, and a game I’ve been playing semi-professionally for over a decade now. I’m 61 years old, but I’m not your average old man in the game. I mostly play No Limit Hold’em (which sets me apart from most old-timers already), and I mainly play NL$400 online and $5/$10 or $10/$20 in the live games here in Las Vegas.
You can find me in the Venetian poker room during the year; mostly Tuesday through Saturday between 10am and 8pm; sometimes later if the game is really good. Sometimes I cross the street to The Mirage; but Venetian really is my home. During the WSOP however, my cash game action moves to the Rio, and I do a couple events. I hate the $1,000 and $1,500 events, so you’ll find me in the higher buyin events most of the time. I’ve also been playing the Main Event now for six years and managed to cash twice (which I believe is pretty solid).
Enjoy my blog – hit me up if you have any questions – and I look forward to maintaining it!
